24 Horas de Le Mans 1965
Dois anos antes, a Ferrari apresentou o 250LM, uma versão cupê do 250P, mas ele não foi homologado. Na Le Mans de 1965, porém, o assunto foi resolvido e os clientes da Ferrari estavam correndo com o novo 250LM. Eles fizeram um bom trabalho, porque a fábrica hesitou nos esforços com os protótipos e os carros fechados fizeram as honras da Ferrari. O ataque da marca italiana veio na forma dos protótipos P2-330, com um motor de 4 litros e comando duplo de cabeçote, Mas quando ambos os carros da fábrica saíram com problemas no câmbio, os clientes da Ferrari levaram o bastão, terminando nos três primeiros lugares. O carro vencedor foi uma Berlinetta, inscrito pela equipe NART.
A saga dos americanos continua. Desapontada com o desempenho do ano anterior, a Ford chama o piloto-construtor californiano Carroll Shelby para supervisionar o desenvolvimento dos carros, nascia a versão Mark I. Engenheiros são recrutados para o projeto, agora a cargo da Ford Advanced Vehicles. O piloto Ken Miles passa a ser o principal Test Driver da equipe. Os pneus agora vinham da Dunlop. A primeira corrida do ano foi os 2000 Quilometros de Daytona, na Flórida, onde a Ford venceu com Ken Miles e Lloyd Ruby, mas a concorrência não estava à altura. Na segunda, em Sebring, o Mark II ficou atrás do Chaparral, carro projetado por Jim Hall e equipado com motor Chevrolet, a maior concorrente da Ford nos EUA.
Em Le Mans, seis carros Ford entram na disputa, cinco deles preparados pela Shelby American. Sua cilindrada é aumentada para 4.7L, o motor pesava 280 kgs, muito para um protótipo com pretensões de vencer a Ferrari, mas era muito potente, 485 cv a 6.200 rpm, em testes atingiu a máxima de 329 km/h. Porém, todos abandonam. Um deles, repetindo o ano anterior, faz a melhor volta da prova e também a pole position. Em 1965 a potência foi aumentada em 50hp, subindo também o torque. Os problemas de câmbio desapareceram com a troca da Colotti pela alemã ZF. Surge também uma versão mais aperfeiçoada, o modelo GT40 Mark II, cuja maior diferença é o motor, agora com 7 litros de cilindrada. Por força dos aperfeiçoamentos, os freios são aumentados, as entradas de ar para refrigeração são redesenhadas, as rodas de aros são substituídas pelo tipo de liga leve. A Ford, mais uma vez não terminou, porém, os carros americanos foram os que mais ameaçaram a vitória italiana.
A equipe de Luigi Chinetti, a North American Racing Team (NART) chegou à vitória com a Ferrari 250/275LM pilotada por Masten Gregory e Jochen Rindt. Rindt é o primeiro austríaco a vencer em Le Mans, e um dos quatro pilotos a conseguirem vencer o Campeonato de Fórmula 1 (vencerá em 1970) e em Le Mans. Esta vitória será a última da Ferrari em Le Mans. Nunca mais a Fábrica italiana conseguirá vencer na geral. Com relação aos pneus, foi a primeira vitória da Goodyear em Le Mans. Primeira participação de uma Ferrari 275GTB, a primeira Ferrari GT com suspensão independente nas quatro rodas. Além disto, é considerada uma das mais belas Ferrari já construídas até hoje.
A Porsche vence por índice de Rendimento Energético com os pilotos Gerhard Koch e Anton Fischaber conduzindo o modelo 904 Carrera GTS Coupé. Na classificação geral, cruzaram a linha de chagada em quinto lugar. Já os pilotos Herbert Linge e Peter Nocker com um Porsche 904/6 venceram na categoria de 1601 a 2000cm³ e por Índice de Desempenho (handicap entre a potência ou a cilindrada dos motores e a distância que deveria ser percorrida). Duas vitórias para os mesmos pilotos e carro, tornava-se um pouco complicado o regulamento, que premiava por variados fatores.
Segunda participação em Le Mans do austríaco Jochen Rindt, que será campeão da Fórmula 1, postumamente, em 1970, isto é foi campeão quando já estava morto. Correu nas edições de 1964, 1965, 1966 e 1967. Sua melhor classificação em Le Mans será a vitória em 1965, numa Ferrari 275LM, em dupla com o americano Masten Gregory.
Única participação em Le Mans do escocês Jackie Stewart, Tricampeão de F1 em 1969, 1971 e 1973. Stewart chegou em 10º, conduzindo um Rover com motor a turbina, em dupla com outro campeão da F1, Graham Hill.

1964 - Campeonato Mundial de Carros Esporte
O ano do Campeonato de carros esporte foi dominado pela Ferrari, que viu seus protótipos 250 GTO, 275, 275 P e 250 LM ganharem a maioria das corridas em que participaram. Mais uma vez tiveram os Grandes Prêmios só para os carros GT e as subidas de montanha em que os protótipos não alinharam. A Ford estréia seu GT40, mas ainda pecam pela confiabilidade, não terminaram nenhuma corrida. Pedro Rodriguez, Phil Hill, Mike Parkes, Umberto Maglioli, Nino Vaccarella, Jean Guichet e Jo Bonnier foram os grandes pilotos que contribuíram com pontos decisivos para o triunfo ferrarista.
