1968 – Ford GT40, O Rei de Le Mans

24 Horas de Le Mans 1968
Por motivo de greves na França, a competição saiu pela segunda vez do tradicional mês de junho e ocorreu em julho. A partir desta edição, o circuito passa a medir 13.469 metros.
Henry Ford II deu-se por satisfeito com os dois sucessos nos anos anteriores e não quis arriscar um possível fracasso, preferiu sair por cima, e assim o Ford oficial de fábrica retirou-se do campeonato.
No entanto, John Wyer, que comandou o projeto do GT40 em 1964, segue na luta com o apoio e patrocínio da Gulf Oil. O regulamento para o ano de 1968 mudava a condição dos motores, agora limitados a 5 litros de cilindrada. A Ford retirou sua equipe oficial enquanto a Ferrari saiu do campeonato. Para a fábrica americana restavam como concorrentes os temidos e cada vez mais velozes alemães da Porsche.
Wyer melhora os freios e aprimora os motores de 302 polegadas cúbicas (5 litros), aumentando sua potência para 425 cavalos, o bastante para fazê-lo atingir 350 km/h na reta Mulsanne, de quase sete quilômetros em Le Mans. Esses modelos da Ford foram denominados GT40 Mark II, e um de seus carros, equipado com pneus Firestone, vence a prova de 1968 com os pilotos Pedro Rodriguez e Luciano Bianchi.
A Porsche lança o modelo 908, com 3000cc e 335HP, mesmo tendo um motor mais forte de qualquer outro produzido até então pela fábrica, ele se aproxima dos carros favoritos, mas não consegue lhes dar combate direto. Mesmo assim os alemães vencem em quatro categorias, no esporte-protótipo e classe de 2001 a 2500cm³ com o 907/8 de Dieter Spoerry/Rico Steinemann, na classe de 2501 a 3000cm³ com Rolf Stommelen/Jochen Neerpasch pilotando o 908, e na classe GT com o 911S de Jean-Pierre Gaban/Roger Vanderschrich.
O francês Henri Pescarolo faz uma corrida corajosa ao conduzir seu Matra MS630 sob chuva à noite, sem os limpadores de para-brisas. Também se deve ressaltar o excelente desempenho dos carros Alfa Romeo T33/B2 que obtiveram o 4º, 5º e 6º postos na geral. Ainda participam as Ferraris 250LM 3.3 de equipes particulares. Os GT40 ganharam o campeonato, com vitórias em Brands Hatch, Monza, Bélgica, Watkins Glen e Le Mans. A terceira vitória em terras francesas foi obtida de forma brilhante.
