Pela primeira vez com o título de Campeonato Internacional de Marcas, a edição de 1968 foi marcada por grandes duelos entre Ford e Porsche, sendo que a equipe alemã levou a melhor no Campeonato, porém os americanos ficaram com a corrida mais importante, Le Mans. A Ferrari se mostrou menos competitiva que anos anteriores, enquanto Alfa Romeo e Alpine começavam a desenvolver seus carros para os próximos anos. Os pilotos selecionados pela fábrica alemã eram de grande capacidade, como: Victor Elford, Joaquim Neerpash, Rolf Stomelen, Jo Siffert, Hans Hermann e Umberto Maglioli.
