1961 - Campeonato Mundial de Carros Esporte

O Campeonato Mundial do ano de 1961 teve amplo domínio da Scuderia Ferrari, os opositores mais fortes foram os italianos da Maserati e os alemães da Porsche. A Maserati obteve apenas uma vitória em Nurburgring, e a Porsche ainda estava desenvolvendo seu carro e aumentando aos poucos a cilindrada, está tática daria frutos no final da década, mas neste ano ainda não eram páreos para os Ferrari. Entre os pilotos que se destacaram pela Ferrari estavam: Phil Hill, Oliver Gendebien, Gianpiero Baghetti, Willy Mairesse, Richie Ginther, Wolfgang von Trips, Ricardo Rodriguez, Pedro Rodriguez e Lorenzo Bandini.

1961 – Ferrari ganha novamente

24 Horas de Le Mans 1961
Outra vitória da Ferrari, agora com os pilotos Olivier Gendebien e Phil Hill. É a segunda vitória de Hill, que neste ano é também Campeão Mundial de Fórmula 1 com uma Ferrari.
Pilotando um Porsche 718 RS 60 Le Mans Coupé, Edgard Barth e Wolfgang Seidel chegaram na 11ª colocação no geral. A velocidade máxima do Le Mans Coupé alcançava os 234 km/h. A Porsche ganha em duas categorias, sempre de baixa cilindrada, na categoria de 1601 a 2000cm³ com o modelo RS61 pilotada por Masten Gregory e Bob Holbert; e na categoria reservada aos carros de 1301 a 1600cm³ com o modelo 695GS conduzido pelos pilotos Herbert Linge e Bem Pon.
A informática chega a Le Mans e a classificação é dada por computadores IBM.
Terceira e última participação do escocês Jim Clark, bicampeão da Fórmula 1 em 1963 e 1965. O piloto correu três vezes seguidas em Le Mans, nos anos de 1959, 1960 e 1961. Sua melhor qualificação foi um terceiro lugar obtido em 1960, com Aston Martin em dupla com Roy Salvadori, um dos vencedores de 59.
Estréia de Denis Hulme, o neo-zelandês que será Campeão Mundial de Fórmula 1 em 1967. Correrá ainda em 1966 e 1967. Sua melhor classificação será um segundo lugar em 1966, dirigindo um Ford GT40 em dupla com Ken Miles.
