O ano de 1973 surgiu com força a equipe da Matra-Simca, como já havia mostrado em sua vitória em Le Mans no ano anterior. A equipe francesa resolveu disputar a temporada inteira do Campeonato Mundial de Marcas e sagrou-se campeã ao final, para isso valeu-se de vitórias em Vallelunga, Dijon Prenois, Le Mans, Zeltweg e Watkins Glen. Seus colaboradores entre os pilotos foram Henri Pescarolo, Gerhard Larrousse, François Cevert, Jean Pierre Jabouille, Jean Pierre Jaussaud e Jean Pierre Beltoise. A principal adversária da campeã foi a Ferrari com seu modelo 312 PB vencendo em Monza e Nurburgring, entre seus pilotos estava o brasileiro José Carlos Pace, vice em Le Mans.
