A temporada do Campeonato Mundial de Automóveis de Endurance foi amplamente dominado pela Porsche com seu modelo 956, vencendo as sete provas validas pelo Mundial. A Lancia com o modelo LC2 não chegou nem perto dos alemães, seu melhor resultado foi um segundo lugar na última corrida. O belga Jacky Ickx sagrou-se Bicampeão Mundial dos protótipos.
