A temporada em 1982 se destacou pelo duelo entre os alemães da Porsche e os italianos da Lancia, com a prevalência da casa de Stuttgart que venceram 4 provas com seu modelo 956 contra 3 do Lancia LC1. A FIA resolveu também conceder premiação entre os pilotos, consagrando Jacky Ickx campeão mundial de endurance.
